TazTrails - hiking the Pennine Way

Hiking the PW has been a bit of a dream since I first heard about it many years ago.

At age 48 I decided to have a go, planning to do it in 5 sections, and to (wild) camp every night. Injuries (hip bursitis, runners knee, tennis elbow), boot/foot issues, some lack of fitness and being a little overweight made these trips quite hard at times. Enthusiasm, bloody-mindedness and a strong sense of adventure made me (eventually) achieve this challenge.

I've now completed all 5 stages, walking almost 300 miles. I walked between 10-15 miles a day so I could enjoy the walk and not risk injury.

On trip 3 my son's dog Lola came along, carrying her own bags and facing her fear of cows.

Now I've completed the PW I feel a big sense of pride and achievement, and have memories that will stay with me a long time.

The aim of these blogs are for me to have a record of my trips, to help others wanting to do something similar, and to provide some interesting reading material.

With hindsight I wish I'd taken my camera instead of using my mobile phone to take pics on trip 1,2 and 3, as the pics would've been of a better quality.

I could easily write pages and pages, as I'm known to waffle on a bit, but I'm trying to keep it relatively short. Any questions please ask.

PS: I wrote the PW1 and 2 diaries 4 years later, after completing the whole PW. I tried to recall the trip from memory and by looking at pics and maps. I wrote it quite fast, as that seems to work best, and tried to keep it short. Though it definitely isn't my best writing, I thought it deserved more than a collection of poor quality phone pics and a few sentences.

Thanks for reading! 😊

  2. That's interesting, I was considering changing from Blogger to WordPress because Google insists on constantly 'improving our experience'.
IMHO they've made things really difficult by severely restricting LiveWriter / OpenLiveWriter's ability to publish easily, forcing bloggers to use the totally user-unfriendly Blogger.
How are you getting on with Blogger when creating blogs?

    1. I'm still getting my head around it but simple stuff is very easy to do. There are also ways in which you can customise your blogs which look interesting. I might change the back grounds a bit, but for my needs I won't spent too much time on it. Some wordpress blogs look stunning, so I'm sure it can be done with some time and effort.

  3. Hi. Loved reading the account of your journey. I did the PW in June 2021 ( blogged at https://litehikersblog.blogspot.com) and camped by Haughtongreen bothy. I didn’t locate a water supply, although I had enough water with me. Is there water where the path going NE from the bothy crosses a stream? I’d like to know as I may do the PW again next year. It’s that good.

  4. Hi, the stream runs just past the little woodland (follow the fence), there is also a spring by the wind generator (I was told).
